What should I do before travelling to Emergency Vet Team?

When your pet needs urgent veterinary care, travelling safely and calmly is important. Before setting off, please contact our Emergency Vet Team for advice. Our experienced team can assess your pet’s situation, advise you on the safest way to transport them, and prepare for your arrival.

  • Any medications your pet is currently taking or any existing medical conditions
  • Details of any possible poisoning, foreign body ingestion, recent injury or accident

Keep your pet calm and comfortable

During a pet emergency, reducing stress and movement can help prevent your pet’s condition from worsening.

  • Keep your pet warm, quiet, and as comfortable as possible.
  • Handle your pet gently and avoid unnecessary movement.
  • Keep noise and activity around your pet to a minimum.

Transport your pet safely

The safest way to transport your pet will depend on their condition:

  • Cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and small pets: Use a secure carrier lined with a towel or blanket to keep them comfortable and prevent movement during travel.
  • Dogs or larger pets: If your pet cannot walk, use a blanket, towel, or firm surface to support them when moving them.
  • If your pet has an injury, avoid moving them more than necessary.

Avoid giving food, medication, or home treatments

Unless advised by a veterinary professional:

  • Do not give your pet human medications, as many can be harmful or toxic.
  • Do not give medication left over from previous illnesses.
  • Avoid giving food or water if your pet may require urgent treatment, sedation, or surgery.
