Losing a much-loved pet can be incredibly difficult. For many people, pets are a huge part of the family, and their loss can be deeply upsetting.

At EVT, we understand that there is no right or wrong way to grieve. Everyone experiences pet loss differently, and it is completely normal to feel a range of emotions following the death of a pet.

On this page, we explain what to expect if your pet passes away at EVT, including the aftercare options available to you, as well as where you can find support to help you cope with your loss.

Losing a pet can be an incredibly emotional and difficult experience. If your pet passes away while they are receiving care from our team, we will give you time and space to say goodbye and will support you through the next steps.

You don’t need to make every decision immediately. We will explain the options available to you and answer any questions you may have.

Saying goodbye

If you wish, you can spend some quiet time with your pet after they have passed away. There is no right or wrong way to say goodbye, and you can take as much time as you need within the circumstances.

You may wish to bring a family member or someone close to you for support.

Making aftercare arrangements

We can talk you through the different aftercare options available and provide details of the cremation services we work with, so you can choose the arrangement that feels right for you and your pet.

Taking your time

It is completely normal to feel overwhelmed, upset or unsure about what to do next. If you’re not ready to make decisions straight away, please let our team know and we will do our best to support you.

Your pet has been a much-loved part of your family, and we understand how difficult this moment can be. We’re here to help you through it with compassion and care.

There are two main cremation options available:

Individual cremation – If you would like your pet’s ashes returned to you, we can provide the details of our trusted pet cremations partners, Scrappies, who can talk you through the options available.

Communal cremation – We can arrange this for you, so you don’t need to make any additional arrangements during what can be a difficult time.

If you choose communal cremation, EVT can arrange this for you. The cost is:

  • Cat: £50.40
  • Dog under 30kg: £60
  • Dog over 30kg: £69

If you choose individual cremation, the cremation service will discuss the available options and costs directly with you.

Euthanasia fees are separate and will be discussed with you by the EVT team before proceeding.

We understand how important it can be to be with your pet during their final moments. We are happy for you to stay with your pet throughout the euthanasia process and spend some quiet time with them afterwards if you wish.

Our team will explain what to expect and support you throughout! 🐾

If you would prefer to bury your pet at home, please let our team know. We can discuss the options with you and provide guidance on what you need to consider.

Home burial is subject to certain requirements, so we recommend checking the current guidance for your area before making arrangements.

Losing a pet can be incredibly difficult, and you don’t have to cope with your loss alone. If you’re struggling after the loss of your pet, there are organisations that offer confidential support and someone to talk to.
