Bloated or swollen abdomen with repeated unsuccessful attempts to vomit (especially in dogs)

A swollen, hard abdomen combined with repeated retching or attempts to vomit without producing anything can be a sign of a serious condition called gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), also known as bloat. This is a common emergency in some breeds including German Shepherds, Basset Hounds, Dobermans, Rottweilers and Weimaraners.

Symptoms may include:

  • A swollen or painful stomach
  • Restlessness
  • Repeated attempts to vomit
  • Excessive drooling
  • Weakness or collapse

This is a life-threatening emergency and requires immediate veterinary care.
